The Function of Fantasy in the Lacanian Real

Ben Fama

I finally get my scene with death on the red carpet at an award show. An actor who has played me in a feature-length film based on my memoir appears alongside me before the camera. Death interviews me about my apparel, asks whom I’m wearing, who I’m looking forward to seeing tonight. Not having had voice lessons or PR coaching: my answers fall flat. The younger, skinnier actor follows up on my comments with gracious sentiment.
